Legendary Burgers at Protea Hotel Fire & Ice!
Legendary Burgers at Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! |

There’s only one place to find South Africa’s best burgers and that’s at Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! in Cape Town. The hotel’s executive chef Jason Scott’s burgers are designed the way everything else is there - with a lot of fun, more than a little talent and a huge dollop of style. The hotel has just done a complete revamp of the burger menu, which will be available from the beginning of December. A whole new “build your own burger” section is included, which allows hungry diners to mix-and-match burgers with sauces of their choice, but old favourites like the Jaws Burger, the Cheesy Cheese Cheese Burger and the Just Butt Out Burger are still there. It’s difficult to identify just one burger that stands out from the selection, because all of them are divine but slightly mad. Besides first-rate ingredients, the biggest difference between your run-of-the-mill burger menu and the one at Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! is the enormous variety. If you want a 100% pure ostrich burger, why not try it with a teriyaki pineapple sauce? Or what about a game burger (usually kudu or springbok) with a mixed berry coulis? But what if you don’t like meat? Ta-dah! Let’s introduce you to the salmon fillet burger with a wholegrain mustard and honey sauce. If that doesn’t wag your tail, how about a flat-top grilled hake fillet burger topped with a Thai coriander and coconut milk sauce, sprinkled with coconut shavings? Or perhaps a succulent chicken breast burger with a Neopolitan habanero salsa? But what to do, what to do if you don’t eat meat? Easy-peasy! Dig into the chef’s “Magic Shroom” burger that comprises a large Portobello mushroom stuffed with roast vegetables, oven-baked and topped with ripe camembert and a balsamic and rosemary chutney. The beef burgers are 100% sirloin and don’t contain any byproducts or binding agents, according to Scott. “You just need the right meat and it won’t fall apart.” One of the best on the menu, though, is the 100% pure lamb burger with a triple peppercorn sauce and Scott is happy to share his secret recipe...click here for more!
