The venerable lady of Durban’s Golden Mile, the Protea Hotel Edward, is more gorgeous and stylish than ever after being refurbished inside & out.

All of the 101 bedrooms have been redecorated in a style sympathetic to the overall elegance of the hotel.  Cool and calming colours in rich, sumptuous fabrics adorn graceful furnishings, but a nod to the modern era means rooms are equipped with LCD TVs, new carpeting has been replaced and graphics and wall finishes upgraded.

The public areas of the hotel have also been given a graceful facelift, including the hotel’s restaurant and extensive conference and function facilities.  The largest room accomodates 200 delegates cinema-style but is also an elegant venue for gala dinners, awards evenings, cocktail parties and wedding receptions.  The exterior of the building has been completely renovated to ensure that the art deco façade is the most impressive on Durban’s beachfront.  All exterior signage has been upgraded and improved with additional signage in place facing the city.

Attractions

The Hotel is situated on the beachfront and opposite Funworld, heaven for kids with numerous fun rides such as the chairlift and carousel.

Visit uShaka Marine World with its dolphinarium, sea pool and enough water slides to keep any adrenalin junkie happy. Seaworld, which is part of the complex, is home to sharks, and seals and is the largest aquarium in the southern hemisphere.

The hotel will arrange excursions to game reserves and provide opportunities to experience the Zulu culture.
Minitown is a miniature city situated on the beachfront and complete with replicas of famous Durban landmarks, including the Protea Hotel Edward.

Crocodile Creek is another wildlife destination; they offer guided tours and demonstrations every day. See 9 000 crocodiles, snakes, tortoise, leguaans, miniature monkeys and alligators. For birdwatchers, the Palmiet Nature Reserve (11km away) offers a great birding experience.
